You’re Hired – Reinvigorate Workforce with Apprenticeships
With so much discussion around the skills gap in manufacturing, and with doubt cast on our ability to fill valuable manufacturing jobs in coming years, you’d think that we as an industry had covered it all, and said all there is to say. But Chris Kaiser, BIG Kaiser’s President and CEO, has a unique, multi-cultural background in manufacturing. Because of his years in the industry on both sides of the pond, Manufacturing Engineering asked him to weigh in on the subject in the magazine’s Focus on the Workforce section.
Having grown up in Switzerland at the KAISER Precision Tooling facility, he has an insider perspective on how Swiss manufacturing maintains its spot as a global manufacturing leader despite its comparatively small size. According to Chris, nobody can rival the U.S. in terms of sheer opportunity, but it can’t hurt to look around and borrow the best of successful central European economies in order to better realize that opportunity. He discussed this with Manufacturing Engineering magazine, telling editors there how he could envision the KAISER apprenticeship model working here in the states. The goal would be to simultaneously create a more technologically capable workforce, and build a sort of “farm team” for manufacturing companies to groom talent and skills from a young age.
