Live from IMTS: Passing Observations

Presetters as Quality Assurance Devices?

The new Speroni Futura, unveiled for the first time in the U.S. at IMTS, has been a constant source of attention from IMTS attendees. While we’ve known it was coming, the details of this presetter had been kept under tight, secretive wraps for months. In fact, the machine hadn’t seen the light of day on this side of the pond until it was unpacked and set up right here at the BIG Kaiser booth.

We’ve made the case for presetters as an internal quality assurance device many times.  By measuring the cutting edges of your tools, you ensure they precisely match job specifications and are ready to be used in the machine. Adjustments that could take up to 15 minutes when made on your machine can be made offline in less than a minute on a presetter, while your machine continues cutting.

The new Speroni Futura features plenty of improvements over its predecessor, especially in construction and ergonomics for ease of use. But the data capture, management and usage capabilities are really turning attendee heads.

And not just attendees – apparently some competitors have caught wind of the new European invasion, and are looking to use the Speroni Futura as a quality assurance device for their own tools. This presetter’s reporting and data management abilities make it ideal for tool makers checking their own cutting tools for precision and accuracy as they come off the line – the reports verify the tools’ quality.

“Have some of our competitors been over here looking at the Futura? No,” says Doug Sumner. “All of our competitors have been over here looking at it. Speroni’s innovation in manufacturing of presetters for nearly 50 years has proven the construction as the foundation of good measurements, and continues that to this day in the Futura as setting the benchmark for future presetters.”
