Sphinx
Micro Drills with Extended Range
Introduced by BIG Kaiser at IMTS 2004 |
| |
| ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL—BIG
Kaiser Precision Tooling will introduce a new line of solid
carbide Sphinx micro drills, with extended range from 1mm (0.039")
to 2 mm (0.078"), in Booth E-2005 at IMTS 2004, September
8-15, in Chicago’s McCormick Place. |
| |
| Sphinx
solid carbide micro drills have a tolerance range of +0/-0.004
mm. They feature a reinforced shank and are now offered for
diameters from 0.05mm (0.002") to 2mm (0.078") in
a standard length of 25 mm (0.984"). From 1mm to 2mm,
the new line now offers very precise diameter steps in increments
of 0.01 mm to more closely suit customer requirements. |
| |
| Solid
carbide micro drills have higher rigidity than high speed steel,
longer tool life, and they are preferred for drilling certain
harder materials. In many applications, it is possible to use
the carbide micro drills as reamers. Sphinx also offers high
speed steel micro drills for diameters from 0.05 mm to 3 mm,
and they can be used for most applications. |
| |
| The
superior hole quality and repeatability of Sphinx micro drills
derive from a unique manufacturing process that gives these
small diameter drills the same centering and cutting characteristics
found on larger diameter performance drills. “Sphinx
uses a four-facet web thinning process in manufacture to achieve
precision cutting and point geometries specific to each application,” explains
Jack Burley, BIG Kaiser Vice President, Engineering. |
| |
| Craftspeople
produce these tiny micro drills working under a microscope,
using Sphinx’s unique four-facet web thinning process.
The human eye cannot see the remarkable precision Sphinx achieves
in their manufacture. |
| |
| Representative
applications for micro drills include machining carburetor
fuel injector nozzles in the automobile industry, various controls
and instruments in appliance manufacturing, burner nozzles
for welding equipment, and various medical product applications. |
| |
| Sphinx,
based in Biberist, Switzerland, with an additional manufacturing
facility at Porrentruy, was founded in 1876 and received the
original Swiss patent on a twist drill in 1897. Sphinx produces
1,200,000 different drills, many custom specials, including
about 1,200 different standard drills. |
