ELK
GROVE VILLAGE, IL—A series of ultra lightweight automatic
balanced precision boring heads for diameters ranging from
3.937" to 8.000" has been introduced by BIG Kaiser
Precision Tooling Inc.
The EWB-AL
aluminum tooling system, requiring only two different heads
to cover the entire diameter range, is designed for cutting
speeds up to 6,600 SFM. The system offers simultaneous clamping
of adjusting cartridge and counterweight to ensure precision
accuracy and safe operation at high speeds.
EWB-AL heads
are made of high tensile aluminum with hard coating, resulting
in a tool weight 1/3 that of steel, and are equipped with
a highly accurate self-balancing mechanism. Combined with
reductions and extensions made from the same material, tool
weight for long and large diameter tool combinations is reduced
by more than 50%, eliminating weight problems during automatic
tool changing (ATC).
“EWB-AL
boring heads are ideal for the machining of precision bores
with high spindle speeds and/or long bore depths,” explained
Matt Tegelman, Product Manager, Kaiser Tooling Systems. “These
lightweight heads feature a highly accurate cutting edge
adjustment for forward bore operations ranging from 3.937" -
8.000" and back bore operations from 4.409" - 8.000",
combined clamping that offers excellent positional accuracy,
and a hard coated surface that extends the life of the tool
by reducing wear and tear.”
EWB heads
are designed for precision boring on modern CNC machining
centers, allowing users to perform forward and back boring
operations without the need for additional components. They
feature micrometric adjustment precision, with dials graduated
in increments of .0005 inches. The dial’s design allows
for precision adjustments to be made at the machine.
A high precision
Vernier scale permits more accurate setting accuracy to 0001"/diameter.
Precision balancing occurs automatically with adjustment
of the diameter.
“Use
of balanced heads provides the greatest assurance of optimum
performance and produces a notable improvement in surface
finish,” Tegelman said. “Modern cutting materials
such as poly-crystalline diamond (PCD) and cubic boron nitride
(CBN) perform best with high speed operation. Balanceable
tooling gives the optimum surface footage required for peak
production and high finish quality. They are highly recommended
for high speed applications and will enhance performance
in moderate speed applications as well,” he added.
